Congratulations! If you are a casual scuba diver who wants to become
a casual videographer without depleting your life savings, you just
found the right spot - not always an easy thing to do on the world
wide web. It's easy to search so long that you come to the conclusion
that 'affordable underwater camcorder housing' is an oxymoron -
but fortunately you persisted and wound up here!
A number of companies manufacture a variety of underwater camcorder
housings, which is great because it enables you to make choices
about what you want and need. Some are made of polycarbonate plastics,
others of aluminum. Some use mechanical controls similar to those
used for still photography, that is, intended for a specific camcorder
model. When selecting an underwater video housing, you have the
option of using one with electronic controls which can accomodate
a variety of VHS-C, DV, or Hi8 models, and so is more model independent.
It's safe to assume that all perform the most basic function, keeping
your video recorder dry, with

about the same level of performance and the same caveats concerning the
attention that must be paid to the single most important component,
the o-ring.
NDH housings have a universal design utilizing the Sony®
LANC interface. In the fast-paced world of camcorders with ever-increasing
lists of features, this enables you to upgrade your camcorder as
often as your pocketbook can stand while keeping the same housing.
It makes your old camcorder easier for you to sell because you don't
have to unload the old underwater housing at the same time - you
can sell the camcorder to other divers or landlubbers alike.
NDH housings' anodized aluminum construction means that you can
expect years of service; aluminum doesn't dry out and crack while
waiting for your next dive trip and has much higher impact resistance.
Aluminum housings are remarkably close in weight to plastic ones
since plastic designs typically need thicker walls.
